SOLDIERS OF MISFORTUNE

No soldier of your country,

You bear the devil’s mace,

You’re clueless or you couldn’t care,

Betrayers of your race:

You cannot claim you didn’t know,

That you were taken in,

You were aware as others are,

You’re guilty as is sin.

 .

No saviours of your people,

Or keepers of your realm,

You kill, you maim and plunder,

You cheat and overwhelm,

You cannot claim that you were duped,

The uniform you’re in,

Is foreign made and foreign bought

But you betray your skin.

.

Dollars come and Shekels flow,

You Soldiers of Misfortune,

No welcome home awaits you,

You victims of importune,

Grovel not for clap and cry,

Beneath the sod you sleep,

There is no glory for a fool,

His medal is the wreath.

 .

‘Military men are just dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy.’

Henry Kissinger as quoted in Kiss the Boys Goodbye: How the United States Betrayed Its Own POW in Vietnam (1990) by Monika Jensen-Stevenson and William Stevenson.
