Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has hit out at meddling from the European Union’s Jean-Claude Juncker. The Italian minister, who is mobbed by adoring fans whenever he presses the flesh, is threatening to sue Juncker after comments made by the unelected, unaccountable European Commission President.
Juncker, who is under investigation for tax avoidance, had earlier expressed concern about the Italian government’s proposed budget and a threat to the Euro, causing a knock-on effect in the markets.
The attack has caused the Eurosceptic Salvini to hit back: “The European Commission President Juncker, by equating Italy with Greece, sounds crazy. He could have spared us that.”
Making clear his anger, Salvini hit out at the notorious inebriate whose drunken forays have been likened to those of Winston Churchill’s. “He (Juncker) should drink two glasses of water before opening his mouth, and stop spreading non-existent threats. Or we’ll ask him for damages.”
Salvini added that he thought such comments were being used as a way of getting at his government: “The words and threats of Juncker and other European bureaucrats continue with the aim of attacking the government and the Italian economy.”
Matteo Salvini’s French counterpart, the anti-globalist and Eurosceptic Marine Le Pen, looks forward to soon meeting the Italian minister:
“On Monday I will be in Rome with Matteo Salvini to discuss, at the invitation of the General Union of Labour, economic growth and social prospects in a Europe of nations,” Le Pen said.
The leader of the National Rally, the former Front National added that “there is an alternative to the European Union and we are building it”.
On a political level, Le Pen and Salvini are allies as both are members of the Eurosceptic Europe of Nations and Freedom (ENF) group in the European Parliament.
According to Le Pen globalisation is a catastrophe for the French economy “as jobs have faded away and immigrants have flooded in, many of them Muslim immigrants, from North Africa. They are draining resources, rejecting French values and transforming the culture,” she said.
Matteo Salvini is Interior Minister and considered the strongman of the Italian government. As the leader of the Italian League, he kept his promises to battle illegal migration and start deportations.
Salvini’s migration policy has had excellent results. The minister is said to have saved the lives of hundreds of economic migrants who would have died during the crossing of the Mediterranean had he not slammed Italy’s back door.
