Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has re-christened a series of islands named after British colonial figures in favour of a World War II Hindu nationalist who collaborated with the Third Reich and the Imperial Japanese Army.
PM Modi made the announcement to rename three of the country’s island territories in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal after radical Hindu nationalist Subhas Chandra Bose (1897 – 1945), in a speech on Sunday in the archipelago’s capital Port Blair, the Telegraph reports.
Bose was an Indian nationalist whose defiant patriotism made him a hero in India for his futile attempt during World War II to rid India of British rule with the help of Hitler’s Germany. The honorific Netaji or ‘Respected Leader’ was the name granted to Chandra Bose in the early 1940s by the Indian soldiers of the Indische Legion and by the German and Indian officials in the Special Bureau for India in Berlin, and was later used throughout India.
Modi insisted it was time for Ross, Neil and Havelock Islands, all of which are named after high ranking British colonial officials, to be stripped of their names. Indian separatist Bose gained the support of Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist Germany during WWII, in a bid to secure his country’s independence from British autocratic rule.
Modi declared: “When it comes to heroes of the freedom struggle, we take the name of Bose with pride and that is why the government has issued a notification changing the islands names.”
Ross Island, named after a Colonial marine surveyor, will now be known as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep. Nearby Neil Island, which commemorated a British military officer of the East India Company, becomes Shaheed Dweep (Martyr Island).
Havelock Island, which honored a British Army general responsible for quelling the 1857 mutiny by Indian soldiers against British rule, is renamed Swaraj Dweep (Independent Island).
With the help of the Third Reich, Bose formed the Free India Army to fight the British. The Indische Legion was defeated alongside the Japanese Army in their efforts to advance from Burma (Myanmar) into north-eastern India in 1945, just two years before India declared independence in 1947. Indian regiments, both Sikh and Hindu fought valiantly with the Afrika Korps in North Africa. Bose was killed in a plane crash not long after the defeat of his forces in mysterious circumstances.
Modi claimed that in renaming the islands, he was honouring a 75-year-old wish made by Bose, who had called for their names to be changed on a visit in December 1943, after Japan briefly captured them.
The Western powers were largely unsuccessful in their attempts to have independent or colonial nations contribute significantly to the war effort. These included India’s Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Iran, Turkey, Iraq, Palestine, Argentina’s President Juan Peron, Chile, Egypt, Syria, Bolivia, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and others.
Many countries merely made a formal declaration of war against Germany after her military defeat had already been assured and the war was over. After Germany’s defeat, many nations offered asylum to those fleeing occupied Germany and the Soviet Union.
