During the South African apartheid (Separate Racial Development) period the BBC was notoriously at the forefront of those campaigning against job and education opportunities based on ethnicity.

The same BBC is now itself lampooned and attacked for practicing anti-White apartheid in Britain. The story marks the latest in a series of similar instances across the UK in which large employers seek to ‘diversify’ the workplace by barring white, and often male, candidates.

The BBC has come under fire for excluding white people from a scheme aimed at training future radio journalists. According to reports appearing in international media the BBC traineeship scheme, which offers a salary of £20,000, promises to provide successful applicants with a yearlong arrangement at one of the UK’s largest radio stations: BBC Radio 1 in London.

Yet, white people will have to put their dreams of working with the news giant aside. According to the programme’s description the “traineeship is only open to candidates from a BAME background.” BAME stands for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic’ Peoples.

The development comes not long after the BBC announced that it would be carrying out action to boost staff from BAME backgrounds. The corporation’s director general, Tony Hall, has previously mentioned the “importance” of efforts to bolster a BAME workplace ‘culture’ at the BBC.

The practice of ‘positive action’, favouring some individuals for jobs over others because they belong to a group that has been discriminated against in the past, has aroused frustration among some who argue that the policy enforces a reverse form of discrimination, whereby white people become marginalised from the opportunity. 

Employment lawyer, Philip Landau, says, that, “the Equality Act does allow organisations to take ‘positive action’ to encourage under-represented groups to apply for jobs or to participate in other opportunities.”

A BBC spokesperson told the Daily Mail that, “this is a training programme and, like many other media organisations, we’re proud to be taking part.”

The BBC incident is just the latest in a litany of others in which white people have been disadvantaged when it comes to applying for job posts due to ‘positive action’ policies. In February 2019 a 25-year-old British man won a landmark court case against Cheshire Police after they had turned him down for a job because he was white, male and heterosexual.

  • I have a friend who raised this discrimination with his local jobsworth MP about this. In fairness, the MP did refer it on to BBC and the Police. After which jobsworth buried his head in the sands. Some of the salient points of his reply are as follows:

    ‘Creative Access is a strategic initiative which complies with its obligations under the Equality Act 2010. Creative Access is legally able to offer internships only to UK nationals with a ‘visible ethnic minority bacground’ because it can show it is offering training opportunities(and not jobs) and that it is targeting a group of the population which is proven to be under-represented in this sector.

    It is important to note that Creative Access (and the BBC) are not seeking to selectively discriminate but to redress the imbalance of opportunities to those from a BAME background in a specific sector. The end result is to create more diversity in that sector, not less.

    POLICE ARE IN LINE WITH THESE COMMENTS.

    With reference to discrimination as covered by the Equalities Act, thats sets out that positive discrimination is illegal. It is argued that the difference here is that the organisations in question are seeking to increase training opportunities in under-represented sectors.

    I understand this is a concern to you and I appreciate you bringing this up with me. I hope through this letter I have shared the assurances given to me that no illegal pracvtices are taking place.’

    Well I’m glad jobsworth is reassured by this. I would be as well if I didn’t have to pay for this discrimation against me via the BBC Licence Fee

    Sometimes you turn on the televsion and don’t see a white face. Well only when its a white women with a balck man in an advert!
