Reaction to several burly British secret police frog-marching the manacled Australian whistle-blowing journalist out of his sanctuary in the Ecuadorian embassy whilst uniformed cops smugly grinned has shocked the world.

I saw him, the way they dragged him down the steps, the coppers, he didn’t look good. I’m 74 and I look better than him and he’s 47. It’s such a shock. For months and months he has been living like a high-security prisoner, he can’t even go to the toilet. There have been cameras watching his every move”. John Shipton, father of Julian Assange.

Michael Walsh, who has been writing for media since the 1980s, is livid. “Although I am British only by birth I have respect for and shared empathy with the ordinary people of Britain, with whom I have lived and worked all of my life. Their good name, and the Union Flag, British pride has been dragged through the world’s gutters, appropriately by a media dubbed ‘the gutter press.

I stand shoulder to shoulder with our American cousins who have similarly been disgraced by a ruling clique who again and again rub their compatriots’ noses in the muck of their own making.”

As news of the appalling arrest and detention of the writer-dissident spread around the world, it was a rare occasion when both the Left and the Right were united. “There is hope for the future, Walsh adds. “Common revulsion of injustice may well be the key to unlocking the labyrinth of lies in London.”

BRITAIN Washington DC’s lap-dog: “The UK police confirmed that Assange’s arrest had been made “on behalf of the United States authorities”.

UNITED STATES Don Debar, the host of the US syndicated daily radio newscast CPR News, stressed that “the arrest of Julian Assange will, in the long term, do more to expose the real nature of the so-called democratic West than 100 document dumps could ever do”.

BELGIUM: The “non-existent press freedom in the US and Europe”, which the detention virtually exposed. Should one come up with materials “exposing criminal activity by the powerful, the publisher but not the exposed powerful criminal will face prosecution? Assange deserves a statue instead of his arrest, and the Nobel prize rather than imprisonment”. Andy Vermaut, Belgian human rights activist.

WORLD’S MOST RESPECTED JURIST: Alfred de Zayas, an American lawyer, writer, historian, expert in the field of human rights and international law, as well as a former UN official, has portrayed Assange’s arrest as “a juridical aberration and a grave violation of the refugee convention”.

RUSSIAN FEDERATION: “The manner in which the UK government executed the arrest of WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange is demeaning to human dignity, and his long-running persecution is a blow to journalism. The manner, in which this operation was executed, leaves a total impression of flagrant and unconcealed neglect for the human dignity of the arrestee.

The persecution and harassment, the creation of inhuman conditions for his existence, this is sending a freedom of speech and the right to spread information into oblivion. This is a blow to the rights of journalists. There can be no other assessment It is a “scandal, a violation of international law, and at the same time a severe blow to independent journalism”. Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

UNITED KINGDOM: “The UK’s legal system is but a plaything of the US legal system. Britain is a vassal of Washington as it’s been confirmed by today’s events,” political commentator John Wight.

BOLIVIA: “We strongly condemn the detention of Julian Assange and the violation of freedom of speech. Our solidarity is with this brother who is persecuted by the US government for bringing to light its human rights violations, murders of civilians and diplomatic espionage”.  ~ Bolivian President Evo Morales

WIKILEAKS: “Anyone who wants the press to be free should consider the implications of this case. If they will extradite a journalist to the US then no journalist will be safe.” ~ Wikileaks Editor-in-Chief Kristinn Hrafnsson

ECUADOR: “The greatest traitor in Ecuadorian and Latin American history, Lenin Moreno, allowed the British police to enter our embassy in London to arrest Assange. Moreno is a corrupt man, but what he has done is a crime that humanity will never forget”. ~ Moreno’s predecessor Rafael Correa.

THE UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations formally ruled his detention to be arbitrary, a violation of human rights. They have repeatedly issued statements calling for him to walk free–including very recently.

TALES FROM THE SWAMP: “I am sure that the whole House will welcome the news this morning that the Metropolitan Police have arrested Julian Assange for breach of bail, after nearly seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy. This goes to show that in the United Kingdom, no one is above the law”, she told parliament.

FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE Philosopher: “England the Land of Consummate Cant.”

FRANCE: France must grant Assange asylum. Assange acted for the cause of freedom and independence of France by revealing aggressive practices against us. The honour of our country must be to grant him political asylum at a time when his freedom is threatened”. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, head of the French left-wing party La France insoumise.

ITALY: Italy’s Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Manlio Di Stefano has called on its “British friends” to free Julian Assange. “After 7 years of unfair deprivation of liberty, Assange’s arrest is a disturbing manifestation of intolerance towards those who promote transparency and freedom. British friends, the world is watching you, Italy is watching you. Freedom for Assange”

SPAIN: “The exploitation, injustice, and privileges of the powerful are only possible because they are based on lies. Therefore, if there is anything that the power is afraid of, in Spain and in the world, it is the truth.  Freedom for Julian Assange!”. Pablo Iglesias, leader of the Spanish party, Podemos,

GERMANY: “It was the German government’s duty to stop the UK from extraditing Assange to the US where he faces life imprisonment or even the death penalty for exposing US war crimes”. ~ Sevim Dagdelen, the senior member of Germany’s opposition party Die Linke

GREECE: “The game is up. Years of lies exposed. It was never about Sweden, Putin, Trump or Hillary. Assange was persecuted for exposing war crimes. Will those duped so far now stand with us in opposing his disappearance after a fake trial where his lawyers will not even know the charges?” ~ Former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis

If Wars Started by Lies

EDWARD SNOWDEN: “Images of Ecuador’s ambassador inviting the UK’s secret police into the embassy to drag a publisher of like it or not award-winning journalism out of the building is going to end up in the history books. Assange’s critics may cheer, but this is a dark moment for press freedom.” – Edward Snowden.

UNITED STATES: “Democrats who have spent two years “feigning concerns over press freedom” in relation to the Trump administration’s attacks on journalists, but who now support the Donald Trump DOJ’s indictment of Assange were “beneath contempt.” Whistle-blowing Journalist Glenn Greenwald

UNITED STATES: “Mainstream media should acknowledge that the indictment was a “ridiculous stretch” and was in relation to “the noblest of his leaks,” making it a “chilling” moment for journalism. The indictment relates to 2010 releases of classified information on US war crimes in Iraq, including footage of a US Apache helicopter, which opened fire killing 12 people, including two Reuters reporters”. ~ Editor of the White House Watch website Dan Froomkin

UNITED KINGDOM: “I would set a “terrible precedent” if a journalist or publisher could end up in a US jail for publishing Iraq war logs and US State Department cables”. ~ Ewen MacAskill, a Defense and Security correspondent for the Guardian

GORE VIDAL: “The people have no voice because they have no information,”

MI5 FORMER AGENT: “We’ve seen time and time again how easy it is for the mainstream media to be controlled and manipulated from behind the scenes by the intelligence agencies and by governments. And that is precisely the model that Julian Assange tried to break. And he did it courageously and he did it knowing full well what he’d be facing.” ~ Former MI5 agent Annie Machon
