CITY VIGILANTISM AT ITS EPIC BEST
AUTHOR MICHAEL WALSH says his tutors were history’s greatest writers. His schoolteacher often experienced difficulty in getting the eight-year-old boy’s head out of the novels of Jack London, James Conrad, R M Ballantyne, Victor Hugo and Charles Dickens.
Although Michael initially set his heart on being a novelist his since 63 published book titles include only three novels with another being worked on. Had the Liverpool born writer of Irish descent focused on being a storyteller rather than a historian it is likely he would have ranked as highly as Jeffrey Archer, Wilbur Smith, and British super-spy John le Carré.
In fact, Michael’s style of writing has been compared to that of the British secret service agent. A reader says, “A Leopard in Liverpool is an excellent thriller written in the tense style of a John Le Carre novel.”
The writing style of the journalist-broadcaster has also been compared to that of Robert Service, Leo Tolstoy, and Rudyard Kipling. In 2011, Euro Weekly News Group, Europe’s largest newspaper of its genre, singled out Michael Walsh for its unique ‘Writer of the Year’ award.
A Leopard in Liverpool is factually based on the exploits of White mercenary Fraser McLeod. Following his return to his home city of Liverpool the arms dealer by several quirks of fate discovers that his pubescent daughter has been abducted by the maritime city’s lowlife. This is an epic fail on the part of the traffickers in flesh.
Fraser McLeod is a veteran of the 1960s Congo crisis and the Simba Rebellions. When you add the toxic Rhodesian bush wars you’re left with a lethal humanoid, a cunning and resourceful human predator.
The action heats up when, in pursuit of his daughter and her abductors, the vengeful McLeod disappears into the maritime city’s social sewers.
Those whose trade is debt and death, sex and drugs know how to avoid the inquisitive. But, they’re no match for a prowling marauder for whom death is no more to be feared than is birth. The soldier-of-fortune turned arms dealer has a single lead and an insatiable thirst for messy and vengeful justice.
A reader describes A Leopard in Liverpool as one of the most gripping stories he has ever read. “I didn’t have to get into it; I succumbed at the first page and surrendered myself to reading the novel until its finish; at which point I had difficulty sleeping.”
Michael says, “I set out to create a thriller without boring bits and I think I succeeded. I wanted also to create a story that would constantly catch the reader off their guard and cause sharp intakes of breath as the novel’s pages were turned.”
He concludes by saying that the grand finale would leave the reader deeply satisfied with their purge of violence, drama, tailspins and twists, sex, anger, exploitation and in the end rough justice.”
The perfect gift for family and friends, comparisons will be made with the novels Death Wish and The Wild Geese. The former is Brian Garfield’s story of a city architect who, disillusioned by feeble policing, exacts terrible justice on the city’s lowlife. Daniel Carney’s The Wild Geese is factually based on race rivalry and mercenary fuelled conflicts in Central and Southern Africa.
Michael says, “They are valid appraisals. A Leopard in Liverpool is a similar reality-based drama. However, I have drawn on my own experiences as a Beatles era Liverpool born sailor born to literary parents, one of whom was an associate of Ernest Hemingway. From the age of 16, I travelled the world. I also travelled extensively throughout Africa including Mozambique, Nigeria, and The Gold Coast now known as Ghana.”
For several months Michael was marooned in the Belgian Congo as the dreadful Congo Crisis unfolded. During his time in the Congo, the successful author nearly lost his life to a shipboard accident, to marauding villagers intent on collecting a White European scalp, and on another occasion when arrested by troops loyal to the newly installed regime.
Asked if A Leopard in Liverpool is possibly biographical, he says that much of it is; let posterity decide.
